El encuentro de San Antonio y San Pablo
Se puede suponer que esta tercera cara del gran Retablo de Grünewald fue pintada para los cuidadores y enfermeros que eran los monjes Antonitas de Isenheim. Representa el encuentro de Antonio y Pablo en el desierto. Según la Leyenda Aurea, San Pablo ya llevaba muchos años como ermitaño en el desierto, y cada día llegaba un pájaro del cielo a entregarle un pan, lo que en el lenguaje simbólico representa el alimento desde el cosmos: la inspiración. Un día, San Antonio Abad, un erudito que había escuchado hablar de este ermitaño, al que consideraba más sabio que a si mismo, lo quiso visitar. Describe la leyenda muchos detalles en torno a este encuentro, pero lo esencial, que viene a representar esta pintura, es que ese día, el mensajero celeste les trajo dos panes en lugar de uno solo. Es una imagen hermosa que nos habla del encuentro del sabio y del santo, del pensar y del sentir, del médico y del artista. Al fondo se distingue el paisaje: en el lado del abad con cara de estudioso y erudito, los árboles están secos, el paisaje parece muerto. En el lado derecho, el entorno de San Pablo está lleno de vida, fluye un arroyo, hay un corzo pastando a su lado, y a sus pies crecen las plantas medicinales.
Podemos reconocer en los dos personajes a Guido Guersi, quien fue el Abad del monasterio de Isenheim, médico y erudito, y las facciones claramente distinguibles de Mathias Grünewald, el artista que pintó esta gran obra siguiendo las indicaciones del abad Guersi y del que se conserva un autorretrato.
Una bella imagen que nos habla de la importancia del encuentro, de que solamente con una actitud de respeto y cercanía con el otro podemos llegar a ser completos en nuestro hacer. En este caso esa actitud se refleja en la acogida y los cuidados del cuerpo y alma de los enfermos del Hospicio de Isenheim. Solo al encontrarse dos o tres, el alimento del cielo se multiplica y nos puede llegar la gracia de la inspiración para actuar de manera correcta en el momento adecuado.

The meeting between St Anthony and St Paul
It can be assumed that this third panel of the great Grünewald Altarpiece was painted for the Antonite monks of Isenheim who were caregivers and nurses. It shows the meeting between Anthony and Paul in the desert.
According to the Golden Legend, Paul had already lived as a hermit in the desert for many years and every day a heavenly bird brought him bread, which in symbolic language represents food from the cosmos, meaning inspiration.
One day, a scholar who had heard of this hermit, Abbot Anthony, and who considered the hermit to be wiser than himself, wished to visit him. The legend describes many details about this meeting, but the essential part, which this painting depicts, is that on that day the heavenly messenger brought two loaves of bread instead of just one. This beautiful image represents a meeting between wisdom and holiness, thinking and feeling, the scholar and the artist.
In the background we see a landscape: on the side of the scholar with his studious and erudite demeanor, the trees are withered and the landscape looks dead. On the right side, the surroundings of Paul are full of life: a stream is flowing past, there is a deer grazing beside it, and medicinal plants grow at its feet. It is easy to recognize in both faces the features of Guido Guersi, the Abbot of the Isenheim Monastery, a physician and scholar, and the clearly distinguishable features of Mathias Grünewald, of whom a self-portrait still exists, the artist who painted this great work under the direction of Abbot Guersi.
This very lovely painting illustrates how it is only through an attitude of respect and warm interest when meeting another person that we can fulfill what needs to be done. This attitude was present in the Hospice of Isenheim where those who were suffering were welcomed and cared for in body and soul. Only when two or three come together is the food from heaven multiplied and we are able to receive the grace of inspiration and act in the right way at the right time.
